Ballygroman House, Ballygroman Upper, was originally occupied by the Hornibrooks from 1895 to 1922. It is believed the house existed prior to the period and the Hornibrooks were significantly involved in a noted War of Independence event with the property subsequently burnt down in 1922. It was re-built some time thereafter and has a long history of interesting custodians ranging from medical, military and academics with the most prominent of those being professor Daniel Corkery who resided in the house from 1929 to 1950. The professor was a professor of English in University College Cork and wrote a number of highly regarded literature and books, mainly the Munster Twilight. He resided in the house with his sister and was well known to be an open house with some of the most interesting characters dropping in. Like all period properties Ballygromans custodians all left their mark on the property and was purchased by its’ current owners in 1997 who resided in the property for almost a decade until they made the momentous and significant decision to re-build the property from the ground up undertaking an extensive and enormous building project delivering an ‘A’ rated home between the front and back walls of the original house. With many of the original features such as room proportions, ceiling heights, window openings all retained whilst adding contemporary design and further floor area taking advantage of the properties wonderful natural setting. The property has been a very happy and cherished home of its current custodians and they have indelibly left their mark on Ballygroman House Upper ensuring its special status in terms of its history and its past as well as its future with a wonderful blend of both old world and the new on the maturity of a site over 150 years old. Ballygroman House is now seeking its new owners and those fortunate enough to secure will be inheriting a wonderful future proofed home with a very interesting historic background and beautiful setting.
